Augmentin, commonly known by its brand name Amoxycillin, is a penicillin-type antibiotic prescribed for the treatment of various bacterial infections. It is commonly prescribed for treating certain sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including genital tract infections, Lyme disease, respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections. It can also help to control the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis, offering relief from discomfort associated with vaginal infections.
The globalAugmentin market is experiencing significant growth, driven by several key factors. As of 2023, the market size was valued at USD 904.18 million. It is significant because it is the tenth- largest therapeutic product exporter in the European Union (EU), with sales of USD 39.44 million in 2023[1].
The rising number of adult and pediatric patients seeking effective treatment for bacterial infections is growing the drug discovery industry. These populations are further reducing the efficacy of Augmentin particularly for the treatment of AdulterantDROs due to its adoption of a class of antibiotics known as beta-lactamase inhibitors. These patients are becoming more and more sexually active, leading to an increase in the number of AdulterantOs. This increase in AdulterantOs is due to the decrease in resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics in this group[1].
The globalAugmentin market is segmented based on different dosage forms including oral Suspension, Tablets, Caplets, Mucinex, Virtual Tablets, and Injectable Capsules. The medical devices segment is the largest, reflecting the increasing adoption of device-on-demand therapies (DOT) as well as other medical services[1].
The growing demand for antibacterial and antiprotozoal medications in humans and veterinary circles[1].
North America is the global leader in patients with the second-highest share. It is estimated that the globalAugmentin market is projected to grow to US$ 4.31 billion by 2032, driven by the high demand for medical treatments for AdulterantOs and the absence of competition[1].
The Asia-Pacific region is the second-largest market with a revenue of approximately USD 6.62 billion[1].
North America is North of theamoto-Pacific coast. It is a leader in patients with a patient-centric view and it is expected to grow at the highest rate since 2007. The product line-up is highly focused on offering Augmentin to patients across North America[1].
Expiration dates for Augmentin tablets should be at least expiration date (inguished from ‘ND’ for unknown dates) and should not exceed the brand-name or generic version[1].
Augmentin is rebranded Amoxycillin and Clavulanic Acid (or both in some formulations) for increased absorption and convenience. This helps in reducing resistance to antibiotics and enhances patient compliance[5].
AstraZeneca: This current manufacturer was the first-to-marketer to offer Amoxycillin for treatment of bacterial infections. This was followed by Wolfsonixiray, and Aurobindo Pharma.
EANS: This current active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) is also the mainstay of marketing for Augmentin. It is often the first-to-market for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, EMRs, and other bacterial infections[3].
